Hi all,
i am currently in the update process of the already realeased OpenVPN-
2.5.0 --> https://openvpn.net/community-downloads-2/ . The update has
been tested and worked so far also with the old default client
configuration (tested with 2.4.9 client). There are two warnings -->

1) DEPRECATED OPTION: ncp-disable. Disabling dynamic cipher negotiation
is a deprecated debug feature that will be removed in OpenVPN 2.6

2) WARNING: --topology net30 support for server configs with IPv4 pools
will be removed in a future release. Please migrate to --topology
subnet as soon as possible.

in the server log but it nevertheless works flawlessly.

Am working currently on an "Advanced Encryption Settings" page which
includes currently four new directives --data-ciphers (data channel
encryption), --data-ciphers-fallback (data-channel encryption for
clients <= OpenVPN-2.3.9), --tls-ciphers (control channel TLSv2 only)
and --tls-ciphersuites (control channel >= TLSv3) all options are
explained in here -->

You can see also the default settings, were i need also your ideas and
comments for may better defaults.
On the page itself is also more planned but to not overload this here
now, i wanted to go now a two step procedure with this update.

1) Push OpenVPN-2.5.0 update with the new ciphers and HMACs for regukar
global settings for RW and N2N. A overview of the new crypto can be
found in here -->

2) I would push the "Advanced Encryption settings" development as seen
above then as one patch <-- this would also eliminate the first warning
causing --ncp-disable since we can delete this option then.

Everything else would come detached from this.

Some additions and WUI restructure ideas after some more testings.

'--cipher' is no longer needed if '--data-cipher-fallback' is in usage,
there is also no need for '--data-ciphers' for the first if '--data-
cipher-fallback' is active. The client can still uses the '--cipher
alg' directive and the 2.5.0 server responds with '--data-ciphers-
fallback alg' .

The idea: Remove the cipher section from the global area from the WUI,
rename simply '--cipher' to '--data-ciphers-fallback' in server.conf
and keep the index, include the 'DCIPHER' (also 'DAUTH' and 'TLSAUTH')
variable(s) to the advanced encryption section with the related indexes
to keep the old configuration but set also new defaults for new
configurations.

If '--data-ciphers' is active, all old clients have the chance with
e.g. an old CBC cipher to migrate also to newer clients step-by-step so
we can get rid of the old broken algorithms like CAST, DES and BF since
they won´t appear in the new advanced encryption section...

The idea of putting all of the encryption settings on one page is a good 
one. There are now so many encryption settings and choices that they 
really need their own page.

The settings changes, at first look, should work but sometimes these 
backwards compatibility settings don't always work as advertised.. 
Testing with a variety of clients and both the current and reasonable 
legacy versions would be recommended, even if it is hard to get people 
to assist. With OpenVPN people have a tendency to set it up, get it 
working and leave it alone until it stops working so there are always a 
lot of old clients out there.

Exactly, the --data-cipher-fallback uses the index of the already
configured --cipher, in that case no interaction is needed from the
user to run the old system. To enable the new --data-ciphers option the
user would need to interact (at least press the save button in the
advanced section) which is not needed in that case... So was my
implementation idea...

If we need an extra page, I would say we have done our job wrong.

We need to make sure that this is easy to use. If we have a whole page full of cryptography options that are very dangerous to change (because that is how OpenVPN works) then we will only have people with broken setups.

I take it that I need to take the patch from your repo and apply it to my local repo and then build IPFire and install it, and I will then have your version. Should I use master or next as the base on which to patch it.

patch from Michael but excluding the up script line for the static-

After installation you need to execute 'update-lang-cache' via console
that the changes in the language files takes affect.
Hit the save button also in the global section since --cipher should be
renamed in --data-cipher-fallback...
Please check at the beginning that all your old settings are still in
place.

Thanks for the information. You say that I only need to build the OpenVPN binary. I may be missing something here with my knowledge of IPFire. The only way I know to build the OpenVPN binary in IPFire is to do the ./make.sh clean followed by ./make.sh build which then builds the whole of IPFire. Are you suggesting that I build the OpenVPN binary by doing the ./configure then make then make install commands or is there some other way that I am not aware of.
I am still learning a lot about what is "under the bonnet" in IPFire programming so excuse me if my questions are a bit basic.

you would need to make a clean build if the ROOTFILE is not produced.
In the patchwork link you can find the changes in the ROOTFILE which
you can adapt to the already existing under ipfire-
2.x/config/rootfiles/common/.
You would need the sources from OpenVPN community download page, move
openvpn-2.5.0.tar.xz to the cache folder, check the md5sum and change
the OpenVPN LFS file with this data.
You won´t need ./configure since all that is already in the LFS build
stage. Here https://patchwork.ipfire.org/patch/3679/
scroll to the bottom and you can find the path and diffs.

If this is done, just delete the OpenVPN log under ipfire-2.x/log and
make a ./make.sh build. After that you can find the new binary under
ipfire-2.x/build/usr/sbin .

Hi Erik,

I tried downloading your file where the required files are already built. However I came up with a different sha256sum to the one you had in your file. I downloaded it several times and the same difference occurred each time.
I will do the build from scratch.

- --tls-auth will now be displayed and saved correctly.
- de.pl needed other 'save-enc-options' name since it was a double.
    Fixes tls-crypt key generation.
- Fixed comments and changed box size to prevent line break.

Hi All,

I am having problems getting the latest patch from Erik to apply to my local repo.

The previous version worked well. I successfully built it and was going to install it today but Erik had some fixes mentioned below. I followed the link and clicked on patch to download it to my local computer. I then did a git pull on next and then created a local branch from it and ran git am patch-name but it came back with the following error.

	git am ipfire-2.x.git-7bd13546f3c5e28fd62e25b487e440690860339b.patch
	Applying: OpenVPN: Introduce advanced encryption section
	error: patch failed: langs/de/cgi-bin/de.pl:894
	error: langs/de/cgi-bin/de.pl: patch does not apply
	Patch failed at 0001 OpenVPN: Introduce advanced encryption section
	hint: Use 'git am --show-current-patch=diff' to see the failed patch
	When you have resolved this problem, run "git am --continue".
	If you prefer to skip this patch, run "git am --skip" instead.
	To restore the original branch and stop patching, run "git am --abort".

I tried re-downloading the patch but the same thing happened.
The fail mentions line number 894 against de.pl but in the patch line 894 is still within the ovpnmain.cgi diff section.

Hi Erik,

I have successfully installed OpenVPN-2.5.0 and the new ovpnmain.cgi and language files onto my system. Everything is working fine. I can see the new tab for encryption options. All my existing settings were maintained. All three of my clients are able to successfully connect with no problem and are connecting with the encryption options I have previously specified.

I have not had to modify anything for it to successfully work with the existing settings.

Looks very nice. Congratulations on your work so far. Hopefully more testers will also not have any problems (fingers crossed).

Hi Erik,

Thanks for all your work on OpenVPN. Much appreciated, especially in these challenging times of many changes.

Am I correct in my presumption that in the advanced encryption settings GUI we will be able to select multiple entries, which will then be made into a list in order that the entries are in the tables.

 From the advanced encryption settings page I see that you have removed the old insecure options, which is good.
For the Data-Channel fallback do you have to have a default or can you unselect everything. There could be people who only want to connect to systems that have the strongest ciphers and just refuse to connect with weaker ones.

For the Control-Channel sections I would suggest swapping the order of TLSv2 and TLSv3 on the screen. The Data-Channel goes from most secure to least secure from left to right. I think that the Control-Channel should do the same.

I don't have any comments about the defaults. They seem reasonable to me.

Yes, the negotiation was already introduced in 2.4. The server check
via 'IV_NCP=2' if and then which ciphers the client does support and
uses the first in place then e.g. AES-256-GCM:AES-256-CBC . Same with -
-tls-ciphers and tls-ciphersuites. Every client above 2.4.0 does not
recognize the renegotiation, therefor --data-ciphers-fallback .

Yes i would really love to do this as soon as possible but since we
introduce the negotiation not before, older configurations does not
have had the possibility to migrate. My idea is now to leave the old
ciphers for the first in --data-ciphers-fallback, but give the user a
message in the WUI and may also in IPFire blog that he should change as
soon as possible since those (64 bit block ciphers) will be removed
very soon. We can handle this via &pkiconfigcheck function e.g. .

We can make there a checkbox to disable data-channel-fallback but for
the first time it might be better to leave it there in my opinion for
the above described migration possiblity. It is the substitute for --
cipher.
Nevertheless, if you use --data-ciphers and the clients are OpenVPN >=
2.4.0 or if system library >= OpenSSL-1.1.0 they will use the --data-
ciphers algorithm before --data-cipher-fallback.

P.S. Short update. I moved now the --cipher and --auth part from the

It is good to encourage people to use modern cryptography, but I would like to raise the point that if we want to support older clients, we will have to support the old crypto, too. Otherwise it is not worth to add the extra work if it is virtually unusable.

I understand the need/desire to support older clients but I just wonder how old we should be supporting. Erik's previous page picture showed the older crypto (BF-CBC, CAST etc) which were marked Data-Channel fallback (insecure). If those are going to be left in then I think they should be labelled Data-Channel fallback (insecure/deprecated) so people know they are not secure and/or likely to disappear before too long.

I also want to be sure that if these unsecure algorithms are listed and selected for fallback I want to be sure that there is no way for my system to fallback to using them by accident or whatever. That is why I would then like to have the ability to not have any fallback algorithm selected. The default can be to have one or more selected but I would like to be able to unselect all fallback algorithms if they are of this type of security.

Did that now in the menu 'insecure/broken' for DES, BF and Cast.
Shouldn´t we probably mark CBC in general also as 'insecure' ?

Have tested this with a client (2.4.9) which have had AES-256-CBC as --
cipher configured. The server provided --data-ciphers ChaCha20-
Poly1305:AES-256-GCM but also --data-ciphers-fallback AES-256-CBC and
the connection initiated the data channel with AES-256-GCM which i
think is even better than the existing client configuration provides
it. May there are also good news :-) .

It would be bad to introduce more labels, but it is technically not broken.

Yes, I would favour a second control for the fallback option, too.

The reason why I think we need to include these awfully broken and old ciphers here is because there are users out there using them. We will have to break their setup at some point, BUT we need to give them some options so that they can migrate away from it first.

That is why we added the labels as a compromise to discourage people from using the old ciphers. I would say that we need cipher negotiation first and then the fallback option for a while. Then, we can remove the older ciphers from the fallback option - or even better - the entire fallback option.

That would be a gradual change and avoid any downtime for people with many clients.

Hello everyone,

Good to see that we are moving forward on making OpenVPN on IPFire better.

To avoid that the conversation is getting stuck again, can we split the problems into many smaller ones instead of having one massive thread again? I think I suggested that some time before and it would really help us to stay on track with things and ideally merge everything that is done already so that we do not end up with one massive patchset that is getting really difficult to work with later on.

Is it possible and do we want to support OpenVPN 2.3, too?

Depending on when the last release has been, it might not be worth it.

Then I have some questions:

1) Does this need to be an extra page? Why didn’t you put this on the advanced server options page?

2) What is the use-case for choosing different things for the data/control channel?

I am asking this because I find this really confusing. Why does OpenVPN need different things selected for TLSv1.3 and <=TLSv1.2? Should we not hide this from the user, because otherwise editing the configuration file is easier?

I assume that clients <= version 2.3 cannot use cipher negotiation? How is it possible to select multiple options here and this still works?

Might it be an idea to go for the initial post, with the update to
2.5.0 new crypto for N2N, nothing changed for RW. In the same or may
the next core update a "Advanced Cyrpto Section" delivers data-cipher,
data-cipher-fallback, can but must not be tls-cipher, tls-ciphersuite -
-> both are new ?

Yes it is posible to support <= 2.3.x . Every client needs to be aware
of the Galois-Counte-Mode otherwise we would need --> '--data-ciper-
fallback' which is equal to the current --cipher directive in 2.5.0 ...
Try to sort it in that way...

existing infrastructure/features. Nevertheless a default can be

Yeah this is confusing. TLSv3 for the control channel is another
dierctive (--tls-ciphersuites), the channel control with TLSv2 uses the
--tls-cipher directive. May also not that bad, fututre sound of music,
TLSv2 will sooner or later go and there is than --tls-ciphersuites ?!

That´s true. 2.3 have no plan how to use the NegotiationCipherProtocol
. In that case the new directive '--data-ciphers-fallback algo' which
is simply '--cipher alg' , as we know it, handles this.

For RW are only two warnings (NCP, topology) but it works here, which
is for N2N not that hard since N2N do not understands
'push|SENT_CONTROL' and it works also not with --topology net30. I
would give N2N all that new stuff for ciphers and HMACs but the RW runs
for the first without modifications. This could be the second patch ?! 
Ater that let´s check the warnings, one is here already more or less
for me comfortably solved :D .

All of my experience to date is with RW. If you will use N2N initially I will have to see if I am able to set an N2N system up in my Virtual test bed. I will only be able to test out any OpenVPN changes in N2N if I am successful in setting that up. I will give it a go.

Okay, the update for 2.5.0 has been merged. That should be rolled out now with no backward-compatibility issues.

As always, I recommend planning first, and then coding. Obviously we might need to program some proof-of-concepts, but that is different to me.

Too much what?

I absolutely disagree, because we are scattering the settings across two pages already which is entirely unnecessary. We never know where to put a setting, how can we expect our users to find them?

There is a difference between IPsec and OpenVPN here though:

IPsec implementations are ancient and maximum compatibility is very difficult to achieve. There are also many in-hardware implementations out there that suck and that are sometimes very slow. So it makes sense to use a stronger cipher for IKE and probably even no encryption for ESP.

OpenVPN is different. We are dealing with software implementations only and I am not even aware of any other popular implementations than the one that we all use. So either you have a version that supports GCM or not, or TLSv3 or not.

I do not see the use-case why someone should choose a different one. Just because it is possible isn’t enough of a reason for me.

Yes, in the backend it is a different directive, but that does not have to concern the user.

There should be one selection for all flavours of TLS. IPsec has some functions that compose the cipher suite out of what the user has selected so that strongSwan can understand it.

I could see this as a simple dropdown as it is now and it would be possible to not select anything. That way the user can use this, or not.
