Hey Jon,
You should be all set up for that.
You will need a client like WinSCP or scp on the command like to create a new directory called “public”. Everything that you put into that should automatically appear here:

Based on how I just got it to work for me here is what I would suggest to try.
Run the command
ssh jon@people.ipfire.org
This will then show

Enter your password and you should get:-

You currently don’t have shell access, but you have SFTP access.
Can you try uploading files with scp/sftp? FileZilla might be a graphical option on Mac OS.

Yeah, it seems that /sbin/nologin literally does do just that.
I have given you full shell access, so please try once again. You should also get SSH access now.

Feel free to block SSH (or any other commands). I had only planned to use SCP and SFTP and git related commands on my side.
I dont believe I have any reason to SSH into people.ipfire.org http://people.ipfire.org/.
