I'm sure someone has seen this...
I can build all day on the 32 bit version of CentOS... but on the 64 bit ubuntu I keep hitting this. Is there a work around or known issue behind building this?
I had it use the compiled toolchain...

ERROR: Building perl Check /usr/src/ipfire/ipfire-2.x/log/_build.base.log for errors if applicable
I tried setarch i686 first and ran it... no change. Am I missing an obvious step?

Please check the Logfile as suggested by the message and post the last lines to see what is missing here Did you see the WIKI pages for building IPFire on Ubuntu? You have to install several packages and need to relink /bin/dash
